Thailand Elephant Conservation Internship
Overview
Work with rescued elephants in the forested hills of Chiang Mai province, supporting their return to a more natural life within Karen communities who have cared for elephants for generations. As a conservation intern you observe and record elephant behaviour, support welfare-led research and learn how ethical, community-rooted conservation really works.
This is ethical elephant conservation — no riding, no shows; just respectful, hands-off work that puts the animals first.
Programme structure
Over four weeks you learn elephant behaviour and welfare science, spend your core weeks on daily observation and data collection in the forest, and finish by helping write up findings that support the herd's long-term care.
Learning outcomes
You finish with real behavioural-research skills — observation methods, welfare assessment and data collection — and a genuine understanding of ethical, community-led conservation.
Certification
On completion you receive the Impact-Trails Wildlife Conservation Field Certificate, recognising your field skills and project hours.
Itinerary / typical week
Around 35–40 hours a week of forest-based fieldwork — behavioural observation, habitat and feeding surveys, and data entry — alongside time learning from the Karen community and supporting village conservation projects.
The location
You will be based in a mountain village in northern Thailand, surrounded by forest where semi-wild elephants roam. Mornings are misty and cool, the community is warm and welcoming, and life follows the rhythm of the land — a world away from Thailand's tourist trail.
